Aberdare National Park
The Aberdare is one of the most visited protected areas in Kenya. With an altitude of 1829m to 4000m, it sits on an area of 767 Km2 in the highlands of Central Kenya. The park is located about 150 KM north of the capital, Nairobi.
The dry upland forest covers the lower slopes and the mountain forest dominates from 2,000M mixing cedar, Meru oak, and Podo trees in a beautiful serrated canopy. At 2500M, a belt of bamboo intricately weaves the smaller trees interspersed with glades to surround the mountain. This is home to animals and plants as well as ‘Ngai’ (God), venerated by the local tribe in the folklore as evidenced by the shrines in the park. There is a deep cut made by the ravines through the forested eastern and western ends.
This unique haven abundant with clear streams and deafening waterfalls break the monotony of the jungle silence. The Ol Donyo Satima (3999M) and the Kinangop Peak (3906M) stride the Lumber of alpine moorland stuffing that 3000M space between them into a moorland cushion.
This Park consists of high Alpine moorland and primeval forest. Rarely visited beyond the lower salient, many visitors stay at one of the two tree hotels, Treetops, and the Ark. Both are situated in forest glades and overlook water holes. Salt deposits lure the animals out of the forest and at dusk, floodlights are switched on so that guests can view in comfort through the night. Many species pass through with some sightings of the elusive leopard and the rare bongo antelope. Each forest lodge is served by its base hotel, Outspan Golf & Country Club, and Aberdare Country Club. Both are delightful country hotels with facilities and outdoor activities.
